Alaska Department of Law - Civil Division

The Alaska Department of Law - Civil Division provides legal counsel to the executive branch of the State of Alaska in all civil actions. The division defends and prosecutes civil litigation to which the state is a party, and offers legal advice to the governor, executive branch agencies, and, upon request, the legislative and judicial branches. Its responsibilities include reviewing regulations prepared by executive agencies, drafting legislation for introduction by the governor, and reviewing all legislation before gubernatorial action.

The Civil Division operates through various specialized sections. These include Child Protection, Commercial, Fair Business & Child Support, Corrections, Environmental, Human Services, Labor & State Affairs, Legislation, Regulations & Legislative Research, Natural Resources, Oil & Gas, Opinions, Appeals, & Ethics, Public Corporations & Governmental Services, Regulatory Affairs & Public Advocacy, Special Litigation, Torts & Workers' Compensation, and Transportation. The division maintains offices in Juneau, Anchorage, Fairbanks, Bethel, Kenai, and Palmer.
