About University of Kentucky College of Law, Legal Clinic

The University of Kentucky College of Law, Legal Clinic, also known as the Clinical Program, opened in 1997. It provides an introduction to legal practice and client representation for third-year law students. Under the supervision of the clinic director and adhering to the Kentucky Supreme Court's limited practice rule, students represent individuals who cannot afford legal counsel.

The clinic offers experience in various legal activities, including client and witness interviews, document review, case assessment, legal research, drafting pleadings, taking depositions, and court or agency appearances. The program encompasses the Civil Litigation Clinic, which handles a range of legal matters, and the Civil Rights and Restorative Justice-Kentucky Clinic (CRRJ-KY). CRRJ-KY focuses on interdisciplinary teaching, research, and policy analysis related to cases of racial violence and historical civil rights violations in Kentucky, working with families and communities to seek redress. Students may also enroll in an Advanced Clinic to continue supervised casework, take on more complex matters, and assist with supervising new students. The Clinical Program is directed by Professor D'lorah Hughes and includes Dr. Austin Zinkle as Post-Doctoral Scholar/Adjunct Faculty. The clinic is located at the Ellen H. Richards House in Lexington, KY.

KY Law school is beautiful! 5 stars! BUT..... 1 star for diversity! As African Americans, we were very few in numbers it seems.... so felt a bit akward. Not normal even (like a get out scene). Lol. Even on campus, walking, driving downtown..... just a white people. Where are the other races /diversity Lexington KY? Lol. Everyone was super nice however. :)

I am deeply grateful for the support I received from the University of Kentucky College of Law Legal Clinic. I was dealing with ongoing harassment from family members I am no contact with. They were calling, sending hateful mail, and even showing up at my home after being clearly told not to. It was stressful and honestly frightening to navigate on my own. The students and their supervising attorney treated my situation with real care and respect. They listened, took my concerns seriously, and helped me understand my options. With their guidance I was able to take steps that deescalated the stalking and harassment and helped me feel safer in my own home. Legal situations like this can feel overwhelming, especially when you are already under stress. The clinic team was patient, compassionate, and very knowledgeable. They explained the process clearly and supported me the whole way through. I highly recommend the Legal Clinic to anyone who needs help and does not know where to start. The work they are doing for the community truly matters.

I cannot say enough good things about the University of Kentucky College of Law Legal Clinic in Lexington. In 2022 they helped my family through my child's name change, and the entire experience was thoughtful, respectful, and incredibly supportive. The law students and their director were kind, patient, and walked us through every step of the process so we always knew what to expect. What meant the most to me was how intentionally they included my child throughout the process. They spoke directly with them, made sure they understood what was happening, and affirmed that their autonomy mattered. That level of care made a situation that could have felt intimidating feel empowering instead. I wholeheartedly recommend reaching out to this clinic. The students gain valuable experience, and families receive compassionate, competent support from people who truly care about the work they are doing.
