About Attorney General
The Washington State Office of the Attorney General (AGO) was established in January 1887 by the Washington Territory's Legislature and later codified into the state constitution in 1889. As the state's largest law firm, the AGO encompasses 28 divisions with more than 1,800 employees, including nearly 800 attorneys. The office provides legal services to over 230 state agencies, boards, and commissions.
The AGO's mission is to deliver excellent and independent legal services to state government, defend the rule of law, and fight for justice, fairness, and the public good. Its work includes representing the state in courts, advising state officers on legal issues, and providing written opinions on constitutional or legal questions. The office protects the public by upholding the Consumer Protection Act, enforcing laws against anti-competitive business practices, representing the public interest in utility matters, and protecting the environment. It also investigates and prosecutes persons accused of crimes when requested.
Divisional work includes Education, Labor and Industries, Social and Health Services, Torts, Civil Rights & Pregnancy Accommodations, Manufactured Housing Dispute Resolution, and Antitrust. The AGO is committed to recognizing, addressing, and eradicating all forms of racism within its scope of work and operations, striving to be an anti-racist agency that fosters equity, inclusion, and belonging.
