About Collaborative Law Institute of Minnesota

The Collaborative Law Institute of Minnesota (CLI Minnesota) is a nonprofit organization established in 1990 by attorney Stu Webb, who is recognized as the "Founding Father of Collaborative Practice." CLI Minnesota serves as a network of family law attorneys and professionals dedicated to transforming how families address legal challenges. Its members include attorneys, mediators, mental health professionals, and financial neutrals.

The institute specializes in resolving conflicts with respect, integrity, and compassion, focusing on holistic, out-of-court solutions. The Collaborative Process is a voluntary approach where clients commit to problem-solving rather than litigation, ensuring transparent information sharing. If a matter becomes contested, Collaborative professionals cannot assist clients in court, instead providing assistance for transitioning to new court-based attorneys.

CLI Minnesota's practice areas include divorce, separation, post-decree issues, paternity, 3rd party custody, grandparent access to grandchildren, pre-nuptial or post-nuptial agreements, and adoption. The institute also handles wills and estates, probate, addressing issues for families of children with disabilities (including conservatorships and guardianships), and family-owned business restructuring. A Sliding Scale Fee Program is available for qualifying families.

I've been a marriage and family therapist for over 25 years and worked with families in both saving marriage and respectful divorce if that's the right path. If I were to need a divorce process I 1000% would choose a Collaborative Divorce. It's the only process that can guarantee full privacy and never having to go to court.
