Delaware Law Related Education Center

The Delaware Law Related Education Center (DELREC) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization registered in the state of Delaware. Its mission is to empower K-12 students across Delaware with knowledge of the justice system, opportunities for careers in law, and experiences with the legal profession. DELREC achieves this by fostering a greater understanding of the law and judicial branch among students and encouraging their participation in Law Related Education.

The organization connects attorneys with students, facilitating interactions and relationships that guide students interested in the legal system. DELREC partners with teachers and attorneys to develop engaging, relevant model lessons for K-12 students, which align with Delaware's Civics Standards. These lessons aim to build vital skills in critical thinking, analysis, civil discourse, and oral argument while educating students about the law and their role in democracy.

DELREC centralizes information on student opportunities, including internships and field trips, and collaborates with various partners to expand its reach. It also organizes the Delaware High School Mock Trial program, which began in 1992 and involves 26 high schools annually. The program enhances citizenship skills, teaches about the trial system, and develops critical thinking and public speaking abilities. DELREC's educational resources cover a wide range of legal topics, from understanding the roles of judges and lawyers to exploring executive orders, desegregation, immigration, and LGBTQ+ rights. The center's staff includes attorneys such as Executive Director Betsy Renzo and curriculum writer Aimee Elson.
