About Law Offices of the Public Defender
The Law Offices of the Public Defender is described as New Mexico's largest law firm, dedicated to representing low-income individuals facing criminal charges. The firm's mission is to lead the fight for justice in New Mexico, advocating from the courthouse to the Roundhouse. It aims for a justice system based on restoration rather than retribution.
The firm employs dedicated teams of attorneys, social workers, investigators, paralegals, and office support staff. These teams work to protect individuals from injustice and address underlying issues that lead clients into the criminal court system. In addition to direct representation in criminal cases, the firm advocates in the state legislature to safeguard the constitutional rights of all New Mexicans.
The firm's values include compassion and commitment to clients, collaboration and cooperation with the community and coworkers, and the courage to be a catalyst for change. Eligibility for a public defender is determined based on an individual's net income and assets, using Federal Poverty Guidelines. The firm provides services in various practice areas, including criminal defense, habeas (post-conviction) matters, appellate law, and record expungement. Translation services are available in over 250 languages, including Spanish, Navajo, Farsi, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Mandarin.

Good for these people for doing the work that they do. I, after committing my first legal infraction, was too timid to go with them, but everyone should, regardless of the crime you commit, have representation in court to put your best interests forward. Also, everyone should remember: When talking with cops, say nothing. Do nothing. Admit nothing, and hint to nothing. Simply ask them if you are being detained? If they reply no, then say that you are free to go. Never say anything to a cop without a lawyer present.

Excellent staff kind and friendly, made the process as easy as it could be. Applied the day before my court date and received a call the same day I was approved. Thank you for your help. Anyone who needs the help of a public defender don't shy away from asking for assistance.

Exceptional Legal Representation and Compassionate Support I recently had the privilege of engaging Mary McCleary, as my brother's attorney, and I must say, the experience has been nothing short of exceptional. Mary demonstrated a profound understanding of the law, coupled with a genuine compassion for those she represents. In handling my brother's complex case, Mary's expertise shone brightly. She navigated the legal system with ease, ensuring that every possible avenue was explored for a favorable outcome. Her attention to detail, strategic thinking, and relentless dedication were pivotal in achieving the successful release of my brother from jail. What truly sets Mary apart, however, is her remarkable empathy and kindness. She approached our family's sensitive situation with utmost care, offering both professional and emotional support. Her ability to empathize with our circumstances brought a sense of hope and comfort during a tumultuous time. Mary's commitment to her clients goes beyond the call of duty. She is not just an attorney; she is a beacon of hope for those facing legal challenges. I am immensely grateful for her support and would highly recommend her to anyone in need of outstanding legal representation and a kindhearted advocate. Thank you, Mary, for being more than just an attorney, but a true ally in our time of need.

Josephine Jamison was wonderful. She took all of the evidence provided to her and represented me extremely well. She is knowledgeable and she listened to the information I was presenting to her. She is the best person to have been placed at my side. I am truly grateful for her support and her amazing work on my case. If she is ever on your case be prepared for a great lawyer.
