Lawyer Registration Office

The Lawyer Registration Office is an administrative entity operating under the Minnesota Supreme Court, with supervisory authority from the State Board of Continuing Legal Education. Its central role involves maintaining a comprehensive and accurate database of all lawyers and judges licensed within Minnesota. The office is responsible for tracking the license status of legal professionals and managing the Minnesota Attorney Registration System (MARS) Database, which allows for searches by license numbers, names, addresses, status, admission dates, professional liability insurance information, and continuing legal education categories.

The office's functions include the issuance of annual registration notices, the collection of demographic and other pertinent data from lawyers, and the processing of annual registration statements and associated fee payments. It also provides lawyers with license cards and certificates of good standing. The fees collected are allocated to support various legal infrastructure components, such as bar examinations, pre-admission investigations, lawyer discipline, the lawyer-client security fund, legal services programs, and lawyers' assistance programs.
