About Legal Aid Society
The Legal Aid Society, established in 1921, is Kentucky's oldest legal services program. Its mission is to pursue justice for people in poverty by providing free civil legal assistance. The organization serves individuals and families whose incomes are at or below 125% to 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.
The firm offers services across fifteen Kentucky counties, including Breckinridge, Bullitt, Grayson, Hardin, Henry, Jefferson, Larue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble, and Washington. Its advocacy supports four priority areas: securing and maintaining access to safe, sanitary, and affordable housing; ensuring personal safety and family stability; promoting economic stability; and empowering communities.
Specific legal services provided include:
- Protective orders for survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking
- Divorces, custody, and visitation matters
- Guardianship and educational rights
- Eviction and landlord/tenant disputes
- Assistance with government benefits, healthcare, wage garnishments, debt collection, and predatory lending
- Criminal record expungement, driver and occupational licenses
- Tax controversy and life planning documents
The Legal Aid Society also provides translation services for clients with Limited English Proficiency and ensures its offices are fully accessible. Its focus broadened in the late 1960s to address systemic problems, and in the 1970s, it emphasized impact litigation, class actions, and consumer protection.

Horrible services, they told my loved one they were approved to recieve help since they haven't been able to work and needed help with a case, at the end they send my loved one a declined letter after knowing everything and even had assigned an attorney to them.

If you're a veteran or service member, stay away from this place. I wasted years and they did literally nothing for me. All my cases remained stagnant. Not the attorney handling my case, not his supervisor, not anyone else cared enough to help me. I had to find a private law firm who would fix the mess Legal Aid created. They forgot to send my new claims, other times they would ask me to call the VA directly and figure it out on my own. They kept telling me to be patient which I was for years yet nothing was ever done. I accomplished more by myself than when I asked them for help.

Got threatened by an employee of my apartment complex, and confirmed with landlord the next day that the employee was trying to scare me. This happened because I had my boyfriend in my car with me, employee said he was evicted and couldn't be on property- he was not, his lease ended 2 years ago and he moved out. Landlord said it's because he was a "bad tenant" and "didn't like the way he acted". But did confirm I was not at risk of eviction or anything. I've been trying to get a hold of this group for almost 2 weeks, and last week when I missed their call by 15 minutes I told them to call me after 3pm when I got off work. Well they called me today at 11:45, so I stepped off work. Caller blamed me and my boyfriend, said my boyfriend "knows what he did" and I needed to have a conversation with him. Said I was the one in violation. Didn't address that an employee of the complex was threatening me with false information and that the landlord refused to address this. All I wanted was to be able to break my lease so I'm not scared of leaving or entering my apartment anymore. Really love the victim blaming. Especially when this landlord has multiple public reviews of misconduct on Google. And my boyfriend who was supposedly a bad tenant got a lease violation because he called the cops because someone in our locked complex let in a stranger who was harassing him (banging on the door and shouting) at 6am. But yeah, he "knows what he did" I guess. 🤷♀️

I've been calling this place for two months every single week almost every single day, and no one has ever answered or called me back. This place is ran by a bunch of unqualified people clearly because they can't even give anyone a call back.

I was being removed from my apartment in Schiller Terrace without fair amount of notice. Someone referred Legal Aide. Kept giving me the run around on the phone. Finally when I was able to meet one of the agents, he didn't have any answers or resources. He said let me get back to you in a couple of days. Called him back a few days after on a couple of occasions. He just kept acting as if he was too busy. Finally, I gave up on him because I knew I had to face my impending doom or try to take matters into my own hands. These people need to stop posing. Why is this even a business?
