About Muscatine Legal Services
Muscatine Legal Services (MLS) is a private, non-profit corporation established in 1971. The firm is dedicated to providing quality legal assistance to low-income residents of Muscatine County, aiming to ensure equal access to justice regardless of a client's ability to pay. MLS operates independently, receiving no Federal or State funding, and relies on support from organizations such as the United Way of Muscatine, Muscatine County, Muscatine Charities, the Iowa Lawyer Trust Account (IOLTA) Commission, and the One Gift Program.
Services are available to Muscatine County residents whose income falls below 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, with occasional exceptions for cases occurring within Muscatine. The firm handles a range of civil matters, including family law, guardianship, conservatorship, unemployment and social security claims, landlord-tenant disputes, and consumer complaints. Additionally, MLS accepts court-appointed cases, representing defendants in criminal misdemeanor cases and children involved in Children in Need of Assistance (CINA) or juvenile delinquency proceedings.
MLS also offers a Domestic Violence Victim Assistance program, partnering with Family Resources to provide free representation for restraining orders and no-cost assistance in divorce and custody actions for qualifying victims. Civil clients are charged a minimal attorney fee, ranging from $300.00 to $1,100.00 based on household income and size, in addition to court costs and service fees. The firm is governed by a board of seven community volunteers.

I called for legal advice on something that has already happened. When I asked if I could get some advice, I was told to call the initial lawyer. There is obviously a reason I'm reaching out elsewhere and I asked if they were a lawyer and she came back with a snide remark. I just wanted to be sure it wasn't a legal aid type place that we wouldn't qualify for and she was straight nasty! If you are in need of real advice, this is NOT the place to call!!!!
