New Mexico Environmental Law Center

The New Mexico Environmental Law Center is a non-profit, public interest law firm founded in 1987. Its mission is to protect New Mexico's communities and their air, land, and water in the fight for environmental justice. The Law Center provides free and low-cost legal services on environmental matters throughout New Mexico, working with clients such as individuals, neighborhood associations, environmental organizations, Tribes, and Pueblos.

The firm focuses on advocating for communities to preserve their right to clean air, protect land from dangerous pollutants, and ensure access to and quality of water, especially in the face of climate change. It is committed to dismantling racist structures at the heart of environmental injustice and disparate treatment of communities of color. The Law Center evaluates requests for assistance based on criteria such as significant threats to human health or the environment, environmental justice issues, and the potential to establish helpful precedents. Douglas Meiklejohn founded the organization and served as its Executive Director until 2019.
