About Nm State Govt Public Defender
The New Mexico Law Offices of the Public Defender is the state's largest law firm, representing low-income individuals facing criminal charges throughout New Mexico. The firm's mission is to lead the fight for justice in New Mexico, advocating from the courthouse to the Roundhouse. Its vision is a New Mexico where justice is based on restoration, not retribution, with core values of compassion, commitment, collaboration, and courage.
Dedicated teams of attorneys, social workers, investigators, paralegals, and office support work to guard individuals from injustice and address underlying issues that bring clients into the criminal court system. In addition to representing individuals in criminal cases, the firm advocates in the state legislature to protect the constitutional rights of all New Mexicans.
Eligibility for representation is determined by net income and assets, adhering to Federal Poverty Guidelines. The firm's services include handling initial court appearances, pretrial release and bail matters, client interviews, pretrial conferences, motion hearings, plea agreements, and trial preparation for both misdemeanor and felony offenses. To ensure effective communication during court proceedings, the firm offers translation services in over 250 languages, including Spanish, Navajo, Farsi, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Mandarin.

After asking for a contracted lawyers address left me sitting in the waiting room for over 1hour 30 minutes. Never checked on me or even offered me water other than a water fountain that sorta worked. Rude, unprofessional , and non informative. Had to find the address on my own. Not even updated on Facebook.

Scheduled appointment quickly, gave calls back as soon as soon without me having to call again. The supervisor explained everything in depth until I did understand fully without any more questions to ask.

10-04-2024, My rate might change over the course of my involvement with the NM State Government Public Defenders Office. So far the process has been fairly easy going. I've yet to speak to a defender, and the clerk said "she will speak with me briefly before docket and briefly after. I would enjoy more than a brief consultation. But that's to consider they are appointed not hired. So far 4/5 I've nailhead contact with my defender. It was a very insightful conversation. This might be an overall.... good experience, will see

Rating 1 star for the fact their lunch ends at 1 and didn't have doors unlocked until 1:15. Must be nice getting a nice long break even after scheduled opening time. Some of us have things involving courts while these ladies are stuffing their faces passed lunch break times. Called and told the lady the door was locked. She didn't open it. Another worker returning to work let me in while tubby was eating

People like Ben Burke and his associates are the reason I'm ashamed to have served. Intentionally misleading a client while refusing to file a motion for dismissal at that client's request is criminally negligent. Anyone who can't make a case for dismissal where the charge is resisting arrest with no compulsory charge for the arrest, especially in a no stop and ID state, should be disbarred and charged.
