The organization operates 11 offices across the region, including locations in Bloomington, Galesburg, Joliet, Kankakee, McHenry, Moline, Ottawa, Peoria, Rockford, Waukegan, and West Suburban (West Chicago).
PSLS is dedicated to ensuring equal access to justice and fair treatment under the law for low-income, elderly, and vulnerable individuals. My review was deleted within 12 hours. I'm just trying to bring awareness to the public on my personal experience. I reside in an apartment building in Rockford Illinois, my neighbor, who is an employee at Prairie State Legal made discriminating and abusive comments to me this past weekend about my disability and receiving SSI benefits, being on the section 8 housing voucher program, my past involvement with the child welfare system, I was called a "Deadbeat Mom" and told that even after I expunged my criminal record I will forever be a criminal, along with other profanity and name calling. All of which was caught on ring doorbell video surveillance. This is concerning to me for someone to be working at a law firm where there is supposed to be a voice for people like me in poverty. Other than this incident, I have no complaints and I was overall satisfied and impressed. I've had nothing but a great experience with my attorney, David black, who helped me expunge my criminal record in both Stephenson county, and Winnebago county. I think Prairie state legal is beneficial to the community but it's concerning that I had the experience that I did with one of their own employees, even more so because I have a sign on my door that says "smile you're on camera" along with a ring doorbell, and I was still treated that way with verbal abuse and discrimination. Makes you wonder what's going on there behind closed doors or how employees truly feel about the poor and disabled. I just got off the phone with Santiago, I went through the application process, I was approved and told an attorney would reach out within 3 days. Well, he called today. My sole income is SSDI, I live in poverty level and he said he can't pass my case on to any of his colleagues because they don't take Defense cases!??!?!?!?!?!?! WHAT'S THE FRIGGING POINT OF LEGAL AID FOR THE DISABLED IF WE'RE APPROVED FOR ASSISTANCE AND ONLY GIVEN ADVICE AND THE ISBA #!?!?!??!?! Although Santiago was genuinely nice - the sheer ignorance from a so called professional telling me that he just can't send my case onto his colleagues because I'd be better served by a private attorney. OF COURSE FOR $5000!!!!!!!! What an absolute joke.

Jura, Matthew was my lawyer that helped me with 2 evictions. Free help means very minimum help! They sealed my 1st eviction because of the massive bedbugs investigation at Skyrise Apartments! I lost everything and tried to kill myself! After getting out of hospital I still had bedbugs and was being evicted again for not leaving soon enough. Praire State would not do anything at this point. I lost all my furniture, my emotional support dog; Lolita. I lost my pease of mind and will not live much longer! They evicted me and now I can't rent an apartment! I'm homeless! Good job Praire State! 08/10/2025 UPDATES: STILL HOMELESS PRAIRE STATE LEAGAL SERVICE? Really! May God have Mercy?

The attorney I met with was amazing, he got my record expunged, most of all he didn't treat me like a criminal, he truly cared. I would highly recommend Prairie State to anyone who needs help and can't afford it.
