About Public Defenders Office: Hodge Steven J

The Office of the State Public Defender coordinates Iowa's Indigent Defense System, with a mission to provide high-quality legal representation to indigent persons across the state. This representation covers criminal, juvenile, and other eligible proceedings, delivered in an efficient and fiscally responsible manner.

The office employs over 200 individuals across eighteen Local Public Defender Offices and the Appellate Defender's Office. These teams provide representation primarily in criminal and juvenile cases at both trial and appellate levels throughout all 99 counties of Iowa.

Beyond its internal staff, the State Public Defender contracts with more than 1,000 private attorneys and several nonprofit organizations statewide. These external providers offer court-appointed representation in cases that public defender offices are unable to handle. All contract attorneys, along with other indigent defense providers such as investigators, court reporters, interpreters, and expert witnesses, are compensated from the Indigent Defense Fund, which the State Public Defender administers.

Eligibility for an appointed attorney is determined by the court based on indigency criteria outlined in Iowa Code §815.9. This assessment considers a person's income level and the availability of any assets, and clients may have repayment obligations depending on the court's determination of their ability to pay.

Small, not welcoming, or comfortable. Doesn't say much for some of the people there.

It's what you would expect. Busy lawyers who are too swamped to listen to you so they sometimes miss the big picture. Not entirely their fault because they have to take on alot.
