About Student Legal Services

Student Legal Services (SLS) is a Columbus-based non-profit law office dedicated to providing legal advice and representation to Ohio State University students. The firm assists thousands of students annually with a range of legal issues, employing nine licensed attorneys with over 80 years of combined legal experience.

SLS offers confidential services across various practice areas, including criminal defense, traffic offenses, off-campus housing disputes, civil matters, and immigration and naturalization concerns. The firm also provides notary services and advises international students on U.S. law.

While contracting with The Ohio State University to deliver services, SLS operates independently and is not a university department. This structure ensures attorney-client privilege is maintained, and information shared with SLS staff remains confidential. The firm's mission is to remove barriers to student success by providing preventative legal education and resources, helping students navigate legal challenges that could impact their academic and future lives. SLS attorneys regularly represent students in Franklin County Municipal Court for criminal misdemeanors and traffic offenses, as well as in civil and landlord-tenant litigation.

Great experience both times I've used them. Appointments can easily be set up online, with a wide variety of availability. Both people I've worked with truly were very knowledgeable and able help out. Really easy to get someone to double check leases, documents, and to help with just about anything

My apartment was broken into by a drunk, underage, student, who refused to leave multiple times, yet student legal refuses to help because the incident took place with another student. Working with them on past issues, their communication is minimal at best, they don't listen to the victims wishes or concerns, and they can be quite condescending. It's unfortunate that a resource that is free to students (because fees are included in tuition regardless of your choice) could be so useless in moments of real need.

Student Legal Services is more than worth the small fee they charge for their services. It provides full legal support from a professional team that can assist with almost all aspects of your legal matters. I was pulled over for speeding and cited for speeding and for not having a driver's license, which I was in the process of obtaining. SLS represented me without requiring me to appear in court. They spoke with the prosecutor and had my case completely dismissed. That was a huge relief. I am very thankful for their help and highly recommend their services to other students.
