Thompson Barney was founded in 2006 by Kevin W. Thompson and David R. Barney, Jr. in Williamson, West Virginia. The firm's initial focus included cases addressing environmental abuses by coal companies in Mingo County, West Virginia. In January 2011, the office relocated to Charleston, West Virginia, where it currently operates.

Mr. Thompson is a former adjunct professor of advocacy at LSU Law School and a NITA faculty member. David R. Barney, Jr., a West Virginia lawyer with over 20 years of practice, has experience trying cases from both plaintiff and defendant perspectives. His work includes protecting landowners and successfully challenging criminal convictions in Mingo County.
