The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) is the nation's oldest and most versatile federal law enforcement agency, established in 1789. It serves as the enforcement arm of the federal courts, holding a uniquely central position within the federal justice system. The USMS is dedicated to enforcing federal laws and providing comprehensive support to various elements of the federal justice system through multiple disciplines.

Key duties of the U.S. Marshals Service include protecting the federal judiciary and ensuring the security of federal court facilities, as well as the safety of judges and other court personnel. The agency is responsible for apprehending federal fugitives, investigating non-compliant sex offenders, and recovering missing children. Furthermore, the USMS manages and sells assets seized from criminals through illegal activities, a process known as Asset Forfeiture. Its responsibilities also encompass exercising custody of federal prisoners, providing for their security and transportation, executing federal court orders, and operating the Witness Security Program to assure the safety of endangered government witnesses and their families. The USMS also collects and disburses funds as part of its broad mandate.
