The U.S. Marshals Service is the nation's oldest federal law enforcement agency, established in 1789. It serves as the enforcement arm of the federal courts and plays a uniquely central role in the federal justice system. The agency's mission is to enforce federal laws and provide comprehensive support across virtually all elements of the federal justice system through multiple disciplines.

The core duties of the U.S. Marshals Service encompass a broad range of responsibilities. These include providing for the security of federal court facilities and the safety of judges and other court personnel, a function known as Judicial Security. The Service is also tasked with apprehending federal fugitives and criminals, conducting Investigative Operations that include the investigation of non-compliant sex offenders and the recovery of missing children. Furthermore, the agency manages and sells seized assets acquired by criminals through illegal activities, exercises custody of federal prisoners, and provides for their security and transportation to correctional facilities. The U.S. Marshals Service also operates the Witness Security Program, assuring the safety of endangered government witnesses and their families.
