The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) is the nation's oldest and most versatile federal law enforcement agency, established in 1789. Its mission is to enforce federal laws and provide comprehensive support to the federal justice system across multiple disciplines. Core responsibilities include ensuring the security of federal court facilities and the safety of judges and other court personnel.

The agency is tasked with apprehending federal fugitives, managing and selling assets acquired through illegal means, and exercising custody of federal prisoners, including their security and transportation. The USMS also plays a critical role in investigative operations, such as the recovery of missing children and the investigation of non-compliant sex offenders. Additionally, it operates the Witness Security Program to assure the safety of endangered government witnesses and their families. The Service manages a wide array of seized assets, including real estate, commercial businesses, cash, and vehicles, distributing proceeds to victims of crime.
