The U.S. Marshals Service is the nation's oldest federal law enforcement agency, established in 1789. Its mission is to enforce federal laws and provide comprehensive support to virtually all elements of the federal justice system. This includes protecting the federal judiciary, ensuring the security of federal court facilities, and safeguarding judges and other court personnel. The Service is responsible for apprehending federal fugitives and criminals, and for exercising custody of federal prisoners, providing for their security and transportation to correctional facilities.
