The U.S. Marshals Service is the nation's oldest federal law enforcement agency, with a legacy dating back to 1789. It holds a uniquely central position within the federal justice system, serving as the enforcement arm of the federal courts and engaging in virtually every federal law enforcement initiative.

The agency's mission is to enforce federal laws and provide comprehensive support to the federal justice system. This includes ensuring the security of federal court facilities and the safety of judges and other court personnel. A core function involves apprehending criminals and federal fugitives, including those wanted for violent offenses such as homicide, assault, sex crimes, and firearm violations.

The U.S. Marshals Service is also responsible for exercising custody of federal prisoners, providing for their security and transportation to correctional facilities. Furthermore, it executes federal court orders, manages and sells assets seized from illegal activities, and operates the Witness Security Program to assure the safety of endangered government witnesses and their families. The agency also collects and disburses funds as part of its duties.
