U.S. Marshals Service

The U.S. Marshals Service is the nation's oldest and most versatile federal law enforcement agency, established in 1789 by President George Washington. As the enforcement arm of the federal courts, it occupies a uniquely central position within the federal justice system and is involved in virtually every federal law enforcement initiative. The agency's mission is to enforce federal laws and provide comprehensive support to virtually all elements of the federal justice system through multiple disciplines.

The Service's core responsibilities include protecting the federal judiciary and ensuring court security, as well as operating the Witness Security Program. It plays a critical role in public safety through the apprehension of federal fugitives and the investigation of non-compliant sex offenders. Furthermore, the U.S. Marshals Service is responsible for the recovery of missing children and the housing and transportation of federal prisoners. The agency also manages and sells a wide array of seized assets, including real estate, commercial businesses, and financial instruments, acquired by criminals through illegal activities, distributing proceeds to victims of crime. The U.S. Marshals Service maintains its headquarters in Arlington, VA, and operates through numerous district offices across the United States.
