The Division of Law (DOL) serves as the primary legal counsel for the New Jersey state government, established on March 7, 1944. Comprising nearly 500 attorneys, the Division provides legal advice, defends the state in civil litigation, and brings civil lawsuits across a broad spectrum of legal issues, including banking, child protection, environmental, finance, and taxation matters. It is responsible for approximately 29,000 legal matters in various state and federal courts and administrative forums.
