  I have applied to Legal Aid several times. Each time they take my application--and the interview --but nothing every comes of it. Recently I told the interviewer I have several pressing legal issues -esp two that are coming up in days that are urgent. She said I will see if I can get someone to call you. Someone called me at one minute before five pm the night before a deadline. Which was BEFORE a holiday weekend--when I could not speak to them--BEFORE a trial--which was urgent to try to speak to them. The other deadline was a disaster relief deadline. It passed. NO HELP on either. The trial went terrible--I called after 2X asking the person to call me back. She didn't. The message she left me the night before the weekend was for me to call her after the holiday weekend--which was AFTER ALL the deadlines--AFTER I needed their help--and RIGHT before I was due to go into the trial. Impossible to have a call with them then. Except for the fact that my trial went so badly I needed help after it--it was THAT BAD--so that was the message I left--STILL NO CALL. Why is there even a legal aid if they dont call to help you?

  They need to have more options available for people other then evictions. It is sad they only can help if you make below the minimum for a household. What about those who are still struggling financially from the storm and losing a job due to a death in the family and having to get a different job. They also need to help more with custody cases and guardianships so people who can't afford attorneys don't get screwed by the clerk of courts or court system.

  In the last 13 months I have needed and been given their assistance in 4 court cases. Attorney Chris Merkle is awesome in the courtroom and professional at all times. Can't say enough good things about everybody working there, as I'm sure they all have impacted my cases for the better, even if only in a small way.

  My drunk, emotionally verbally mentally abusive ex used iowa legal aid for a case where he got fired for being drunk. Because he used them, I'm not allowed to get free legal aid because it is a conflict of interests... Wow. My four childrens' mental health, emotional health, financial health doesn't matter because he wanted to make sure he got unemployment benefits????? Why do you exist?

  They won't help us out there for 7 years Emotional Abuse. I wasn't physically abused. I'm here to tell you All. Emotional is the worst to come back from! 5o My wounds will take 2-5 years to heal. What a disappointment. LLC

  I was recently in need of legal assistance & because my ex (they wouldn't state it was him bc of confidently, however stated another party to the case)had used this place in the past, they were unable to help citing "conflict of interest". I can totally understand & respect that if weren't for the fact that I know nothing my ex reports is the truth & most likely was able to obtain assistance because of not reporting true financial statements. Also my understanding was that this is a "group" of individuals, therefore no reason the same person would even be addressing my need.

  I received zero assistance from this firm. I have had to reach out to them a few times and each time I'm disappointed. The staff is friendly, but the actual amount of help I received was a let down. They wouldn't even recommend who else I could speak with or offer any words of advice to steer me in the right direction. They may help others with their situations, but I didn't have the same luck.

  Had an open child case with legal and and they closed my case due to me not having court dates back to back! If you ever have a child custody case, I advise you pay for your own lawyer. They closed my case " due to them, not having enough workers" Cedar Rapids Iowa system is by far the worst I have ever experienced! Fast forward now I have trail coming up with no legal representation!
