About American Civil Liberties Union of Utah

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Utah is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to defending civil rights and liberties for all individuals in Utah. The organization envisions a state where all persons enjoy the civil rights and liberties promised in the United States and Utah Constitutions and laws. It operates through public education, legal action, and legislative and community advocacy to enhance and defend the civil rights and freedoms of everyone living in or visiting Utah. The ACLU of Utah works in the courts, at the Capitol, and with the people to protect these fundamental rights.

The ACLU of Utah addresses a range of civil liberties issues, including First Amendment rights, immigrants' rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and criminal legal system reform. They also focus on participatory democracy, voting rights, data and privacy, disability rights, and gender equality. The organization strives to expand the right to privacy, increase individual control over personal information, and ensure civil liberties are enhanced by technological innovation. As a non-partisan entity, the ACLU of Utah does not endorse or oppose political candidates or parties. It is funded by membership dues from nearly 7,000 Utahns, private donations, small foundation grants, and court-awarded legal fees, receiving no government funding.

I have been a long time ACLU supporter with donations for over several years, but today decided I am not sending one single dollar to the ACLU unless they stop investing their money on companies that make weapons, that are being used to commit the genocide of Palestinian children and their families for one whole year, and I still going as I write this review. The ACLU investing in stocks in companies that help Israel violate human rights of children and murder innocent Palestinian families is UNACCEPTABLE, INMORAL, DISGUSTING AND WRONG. Not only that, the ACLU core mission to protect civil rights and human rights in America is in direct conflict with their refusal to condemn Israel invasion of Palestine, and their refusal to divest from companies that support genocide, YOU CANNOT SUPPORT HUMAN RIGHTS AND SUPPORT GENOCIDE AT THE SAME TIME. How can anyone in good conscience continue to contribute to the ACLU? Who can guarantee that my donations to the ACLU will not be invested in companies that manufacture weapons to attacks innocent civilians??? ACLU excuses that they protect human rights in the USA ONLY is UNACCEPTABLE. We cannot support human rights in the US and pretend we don't see our own US government violation of human rights overseas. THIS IS WRONG. There is nothing that can excuse supporting genocide. Any organization in the US that supports the Palestinian genocide will be measured by these standards from now on. We the American people will condemn and reject all individuals, groups, organizations, companies, etc that support the genocide in any way, including refusing to condemn the most horrendous crime of this century. Please ACLU change your ways if you don't want your organization to start loosing members soon. ACLU your lack of action is disappointing and has permanently tarnished the reputation and good name of your organization.

In 2004 I was placed on the "Patriot Act' list due to an incident crossing the Mexico border back to San Ysidro, CA. After moving to SLC I was being harassed by law enforcement and my storage unit was breeched several times with items missing one at a time. Knocking on the door of the ACLU an employee answered and I explained my situation. She gave me a business card and said call to set an appointment. ACLU never answers the phone and the phone mail box is full, so leaving a message or making an appointment is impossible. Returning 2 weeks later another employee answers the door and explains they do not help individuals and only file 3 - 5 lawsuits a year to fight a new law or bill. I am not sure why the first employee took copies of my disability paperwork I was afraid would go missing also? Good luck getting a straight answer or any assistance here.

I sent out a very detailed email about conditions my son is experiencing while locked up in a county jail that aren't of standard. I have not got a response and they never answer their phone. What is the point in this organization!!!
