About The Legal Aid Society

The Legal Aid Society is the nation's largest public defense and civil legal services provider, and the largest law firm in New York City. Established in 1876, the organization is built on the belief that no New Yorker should be denied the right to equal justice. For over 150 years, it has protected and defended the rights of vulnerable New Yorkers, families, and communities.

The firm provides free legal representation to low-income New Yorkers across all five boroughs. Its comprehensive services cover issues such as criminal trials, parole revocation, juvenile justice, child protection, housing, and immigration. The Legal Aid Society operates through its Civil, Criminal Defense, Juvenile Rights, and Pro Bono practices, working to dismantle systemic barriers and advocate for individuals and families.

Beyond direct representation, the organization partners with local communities, offers free helplines and "know your rights" trainings, and pursues strategic litigation and law reform advocacy to achieve lasting systemic change. This work aims to empower New Yorkers, keep families and communities together, and change lives by ensuring access to justice.

No advocacy for Domestic Violence, and corrupt procedures. They should be defunded.

Claire Branscome is the best. After multiple postponements, 11 or 12, her motion finally got my case dismissed. Always returned my calls and very empathetic to the situation. My wife had 5 surgeries during all the delays and Claire never missed asking how she was doing. If the prosecutors were half as diligent as Claire is, they'd probably win more cases. Thank you Claire and Legal Aid. Hopefully I never need you guys again, but if I do, I know I'll be in good hands.
