About Legal Aid of North Carolina - Wilson Office

Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide nonprofit law firm dedicated to providing free legal services in civil matters to low-income individuals across North Carolina. The firm's mission is to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal barriers that hinder economic opportunity. It serves clients facing challenges related to housing, safety, education, and economic stability.

The organization offers assistance in various civil legal areas, including disaster relief, housing, family law, employment, education, government benefits, domestic violence and sexual assault, consumer issues, criminal record expunction, community economic development, and support for veterans and immigrants. Legal Aid of North Carolina is the only civil legal services provider in the state with a presence in all 100 counties.

In 2025, the firm handled over 25,000 cases, helping families remain in their homes, protecting survivors of domestic violence, and assisting workers in securing fair treatment. The firm emphasizes that 90% of its funding goes directly to legal services, and for every dollar invested, North Carolina reportedly saves nearly eleven dollars in emergency and social service costs. The firm focuses on direct assistance to individuals and does not engage in political advocacy, lobbying, class-action lawsuits, or partisan activities. It handles civil legal matters, not criminal cases.

I can understand them not being open because of the covid-19 virus but I was very disappointed that you couldn't at least talk to someone about your legal problems, sometimes all you need is just to talk to someone to point you in the right direction with your situation

Ms. Richardson was amazing in assisting me with an ex parte and Domestic Violence Protective Order. She was attentive and sympathetic, understanding of my situation and great about working around my schedule as a mother of 3 who was working remotely. She kept me informed and communicated in terms I could understand, and she helped me prove my case so the judge granted the one year extension. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER!!!

Legal aid gathered the necessary documents for a very sensitive situation and provided detailed instructions within 2 weeks of initial contact! Very thankful for Legal Aid! Only downfall is the wait time when you call- I was on hold for 56 minutes and then got hung up on and when I called back the second time I was on hold for 42 minutes!!! THERE SHOULD BE A CALL BACK OPTION !!! It's absurd to have to stay on hold that long.
