Exceptions and details
New Mexico has no separately named small-claims court: civil cases up to $10,000 (exclusive of interest and costs) are heard in Magistrate Court, or in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court for Bernalillo County. Limit set by NMSA 1978 § 35-3-3(A) (unchanged since the 2001 amendment, effective July 1, 2001). Magistrate courts cannot hear libel/slander, malicious prosecution, real-property title or domestic-relations cases.
No general fee-based lawyer referral service was found on the State Bar's site. The Bar's public page describes the Modest Means Helpline as 'a civil legal telephone helpline and pro bono referral service' for residents of modest means (staff attorneys advise by phone and may refer to pro bono attorneys). The State Bar also offers an online Find-an-Attorney directory: https://www.sbnm.org/For-Public/I-Need-a-Lawyer/Online-Bar-Directory
